How do you wear a fanny pack?

I'm going out tonight with my girls and I'm wearing my shorts (which have no pockets!) I have not owned a purse in like two years because they annoy me to carry around. All I have is a pink fanny pack and my plaid back pack. I was thinking a back pack might be too big for the few items I need to bring with me (keys, phone, money, dutchies) so I figured maybe I could use the fanny pack that I got for xmas since I still have yet to use it. I've never used a fanny pack before so I'm not quite sure how to wear it right. What is the cutest way to wear fanny packs? Do they go around your waist?
