Fanny pack or back pack?

My friend is about to pick me up to go out for the night. I'm wearing my shorts with no pockets and I need to carry my phone, money, keys, and dutches. I do not own purses or bags I don't really use them. The only kind of bags I own are a pink charlie unicorn fanny pack or a plaid back pack. but I'm only carrying a few things so I figured I'd use my fanny pack but I never used a fanny pack before. I got it for xmas from my aunt since I don't like purses and this is my first chance to use it. I'm just not sure how to wear it, what do you think would be the best way to rock a fanny pack? Don't fanny packs go around your waist? I wanna wear it just don't know how to pull it off, so I'll take any tips on how to wear it, or should I just use my back pack? it seems silly to carry a big back pack for only a few small items, what do you think?
