Are fanny packs okay to wear around?

i'm going to a party in the city tonight. i don't wanna bring my purse tho cuz i will lose it! it's such a hassle to carry around, my aunt said i can have her fanny pack if i need it. but how safe are fanny packs. will it prevent me from losing my things?? and what will people think?? please help!!!
